MembershipRequest

Purpose

A MembershipRequest represents a pending request to join a Community whose JoinPolicy is RequiresApproval. It exists so that a Community’s owner or admins can control who becomes a member, without needing to reject anyone by default — most requests are expected to be approved.

For a Community whose JoinPolicy is Open, no MembershipRequest is created at all: a Membership is added directly.

Responsibilities

A MembershipRequest is responsible for:

  • proposing that one User becomes a member of one Community;
  • being approved or rejected by the Community’s owner or any of its admins;
  • resulting in a Membership once approved.

Not Responsible For

A MembershipRequest is NOT responsible for:

  • deciding the Community’s JoinPolicy — that belongs to Community itself, and determines whether a MembershipRequest is needed at all;
  • granting any rights beyond membership — approval never makes someone an admin; that is governed entirely by the Community’s AdminGroup.

Invariants

  • A MembershipRequest targets exactly one Community and is proposed by exactly one User.
  • A MembershipRequest only exists for a Community whose JoinPolicy is RequiresApproval.
  • A MembershipRequest is immutable after creation; its lifecycle proceeds only through approval events.
  • A MembershipRequest may only be approved or rejected by the target Community’s owner or an admin (a member of its AdminGroup).
  • A MembershipRequest cannot be created by a User who already has a Membership in the target Community.
  • Rejecting a MembershipRequest creates no Membership; the User remains unable to record shared history within the Community.

Pending

Created when a User requests to join a Community whose JoinPolicy is RequiresApproval.

Approved

An owner or admin approves the request. A Membership is created for the requesting User.

Rejected

Section titled “Rejected”

An owner or admin declines the request. No Membership is created. A new MembershipRequest may be submitted again later.

Aggregate Design

MembershipRequest is its own Aggregate Root, mirroring ClaimRequest and MatchEdit: it coordinates a single approval decision without owning the Community itself. Applying an approved request (creating the Membership) is a command against the Community aggregate, not something MembershipRequest performs directly.
